Kazakhstan’s FIRST Subway System, now open – Steven Reiman

After twenty-three years of waiting, Kazakhstan’s first ever subway station has opened.  Construction of the underground transit system originally began in 1988, but the project came to a halt following the fall of the USSR.  In 2005, construction finally resumed.  Today, Kazakhstan’s subway is the newest subway system in the world.

The aesthetics of the subway includes tile mosaics, stained glass, hanging chandeliers, and attendants dressed in decorated uniforms.  Most stations resemble grandiose hallways more than they do subways.  Everything is in immaculate and pristine condition – not a speck of dirt anywhere.  I wonder how long this condition can be preserved?
